Burkina Faso: The French Ambassador recognizes that « his remarks may offend sensitivities and says he sincerely regrets » (Ministry of Foreign Affairs)
The French Ambassador to Burkina Faso was received in audience on July 21, 2022, by Minister Delegate for Regional Cooperation Karamoko Jean Marie Traoré. During the exchanges, the minister « made it clear to the French ambassador that Burkina Faso does not share his remarks made during a hearing of the France-West Africa friendship group on July 5 ».
French Ambassador to Burkina Faso Luc Hallade said he « regretted his remarks on the security crisis in Burkina Faso during a hearing of the France-West Africa Friendship Group ».
“Indeed, Luc Hallade described the security situation in Burkina Faso as a civil war and downplayed the efforts of the Burkinabè Defense and Security Forces in the fight against terrorism”.
These statements are unacceptable according to Minister Traoré who told the Ambassador that terrorism is a complex and sub-regional problem, it cannot be reduced to these terms: « part of the population rebels against the State and seeks to overthrow it. »
Karamoko Jean Marie Traoré added that Burkina Faso therefore does not accept this erroneous analysis imbued with value judgments on the security situation.
The French ambassador has recognized that it is a fault on his part, he understands that « his remarks can offend sensibilities and says he sincerely regrets ».
For the continuation of the collaboration between the two countries, the Minister Delegate invited the French diplomat « to be more objective and restrained », he also informed him that a note of protest would be sent to him.
