Leaders of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) gathered on Sunday July 3, 2022 in Accra, Ghana for the institution’s 61st ordinary summit. The political situation in Guinea, Mali and Burkina Faso was analyzed during this summit. At the end of the summit, a month-long ultimatum was issued to the leaders of Guinea, by ECOWAS, at the risk of facing sanctions.

Yayi Boni is the new ECOWAS mediator for Guinea. Former President of Benin, he was also ECOWAS mediator for Burkina Faso in 2015.

It should be noted that it was the Ghanaian Ibn Chambas who had been appointed as mediator, but he was challenged by the junta in Guinea. The opportunity is thus given to the former president of Benin, Yayi Boni to find a solution to the dispute between Guinea and ECOWAS.

While several diplomats in the sub-region portray the Guinean Transition as the most worrying, the leaders of ECOWAS member countries have decided to offer a new chance for dialogue.

At the end of the ordinary summit, no sanction was taken against Guinea. On the other hand, ECOWAS took an important decision, within the framework of a rapid return to constitutional order in this country. The Heads of State have indeed decided to give the junta in Guinea a one-month reprieve, in order to allow it to review its electoral timetable, and to escape any sanctions from the sub-regional institution.

It should be recalled that the Guinean authorities had proposed a Transition whose duration is 36 months. Former President Yayi Boni therefore has the heavy responsibility of finding common ground between the new strongmen of Guinea and ECOWAS.

Will the country led by Colonel Mamadi Doumbouya comply with the ECOWAS ultimatum regarding the electoral timetable?
