The Transition Orientation and Monitoring Council (COST) was officially installed on Friday, September 2, 2022 in Ouagadougou. Composed of 40 members and chaired by the Head of State Paul Henri Damiba, the COST is the last Transition body now operational.
Restore the integrity of the national territory, provide an effective response to the humanitarian crisis, strengthen governance, clean up and rebuild political life, ensure a return to normal democratic life, work for national reconciliation and social cohesion; these are the major projects of the Transition, declared Lieutenant-Colonel Paul-Henri Damiba during his speech on the occasion of the installation of the members of COST.
For him, this mission incumbent on COST is a vision that can be summed up in a single sentence: to make Burkinabè the architect of its own well-being, of the stability and development of its country. A vision that is expressed in terms of security, development and diplomacy.
“We must each, in our work, in our family units, in our countryside and in our cities, cultivate the security reflexes that help to preserve us collectively. This individual awareness is absolutely necessary in the construction of our collective security”, advised the Head of State.
The President also recalled the role played Aby the Council for Orientation and Monitoring of the Transition. “The role devoted to this body is particularly decisive in the very definition of the course that we wish to give to governance in our country. As a body responsible for defining the main orientations of the State’s policy in terms of peace, stability and national security, COST is de facto at the heart of our strategy, the final objective of which is to reposition our country on track for progress,” he explained.
“The task ahead of you is immense. The proposals you make will constitute the compass that will guide the transition so that it arrives at the right destination. Also and above all, your contribution will make it possible, in a sustainable way, to strip our country of the flaws that it has been dragging for several years”, recalls President Damiba.
« I urge you to take it on with all the conviction that a situation like ours requires, in all humility, with all responsibility, but with the enthusiasm and determination to work for a noble cause which is in the best interests of our Burkina Faso,” he says.
As a reminder, the Transition’s orientation and monitoring council is made up of personalities from civil society, religious and customary authorities and the military. President Damiba is the boss of this committee. Lieutenant-Colonel Daba Naon and Jean Baptiste Ilboudo hold the positions of first and second vice-president respectively.
Among the members of the committee are faces including Nestorine Sangaré (former Minister for the Promotion of Women and Gender from 2011 to 2014), Lookmane Sawadogo, journalist and Secretary General of the Manega Appeal as well as Mélégué Traoré, former President of the National Assembly of Burkina Faso from 1997 to 2002.
