Burkina Faso: Populations in the East demand the reopening of schools

Several people marched on Tuesday, October 18, 2022, in Diapaga, in the province of Tapoa, Eastern region, to demand the reopening of schools closed “because of insecurity”. Students and parents of students mobilized in front of the High Commission of the province to express their fed up.

Parents and students pounded the pavement on the morning of October 18 in the commune of Diapaga, to express their dissatisfaction with the “degradation of the education system in our province of Tapoa”, Eastern region. They say they find that establishments have remained closed since October 3, 2022, the date of the start of the school year on national territory.

According to the coordinator of the march, Yamba Tankoano, “almost all of the heads of schools in the province have been absent since the 2021-2022 school year. And for good reason, the “provincial director of post-primary and secondary education has never resided in Tapoa to accomplish the mission entrusted to him”. Worse, “the director of the communal college of Diapaga has been absent for three years”.

Faced with this situation, “thousands of students are left to fend for themselves”, leaving parents to worry about the future of their children.

This is why the protest platform of the Parents’ Association is very explicit: “We demand the opening of all post-primary and secondary establishments, the appointment of heads of establishments from among the teachers present in the various establishments, the return of all teaching staff to their respective positions unconditionally and the holding of governing councils here in our province”.

During a lively press conference on October 12, the “Engaged Committee for Reflection for the Cause of the East” invited the Burkinabè authorities to act to save the education of around 100,000 children in search of classrooms. . The committee’s spokesperson, Mr. Pascal Lankoandé, clearly indicated: “More than two weeks after the start of the school year, out of 27 municipalities, only 8 municipalities had opened classes”.
