Burkinabe Alizéta Kinda received her “policewoman award” on Wednesday in New York

Burkinabe blue helmet Alizéta Kinda received the United Nations Policewoman of the Year Award on August 31, 2022. It is an award that annually recognizes, since 2011, the outstanding contributions of female police officers to United Nations peace operations and to promoting the empowerment of women.

The award was presented during the Third United Nations Chiefs of Police Summit (UNCOPS) on August 31, 2022 at UN Headquarters in New York, USA.

Chief Warrant Officer Kinda’s career has focused on protecting and promoting the rights of women and children, notably between 2013 and 2015, when she was the Gender Focal Point within the Organization’s Mission. United Nations in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (MONUSCO).

In Burkina Faso, she performed these functions within the Regional Brigade for the Protection of Women and Children, as an investigator on sexual violence and exploitation.

Alizéta Kinda currently serves as the Gender Focal Point with the United Nations Multidimensional Integrated Stabilization Mission in Mali (MINUSMA).

“His efforts to promote and improve understanding of gender, child protection and human rights issues in Ménaka have led to an increase in the reporting of cases of sexual and gender-based violence to the Malian Security Forces”, can we read on the UN website.

According to Jean-Pierre Lacroix, Assistant Secretary General for Peace Operations, the work of Chief Warrant Officer Kinda is a shining example of how the participation of female police officers in peace operations has a direct impact on the sustainability of the peace.

“She and her team are helping to build trust between local authorities and Malian communities, which makes the work of the UN Police more effective and the population safer,” said Luis Carrilho, UN Police Adviser. .

For her part, Chief Warrant Officer Kinda expressed her hope that this award will inspire women and girls around the world to pursue careers in policing despite the gender stereotypes often associated with the profession. For her, women are also well placed to enforce the laws and protect the population.
